NETWORKING

Your projectson your local network.

Develop on your machine through .localhost. When needed, dwell up --lan additionally shares your application routes on the local network using matching .local names.

THE COMPONENTS

How the network works.

Dwell connects your application routes to a local gateway. LAN sharing adds a separate gateway on the selected private IPv4 address.

Local domains

.localhost stays on your machine. The local gateway prefers 127.0.0.1:80 and can fall back to 18080–18099. Use the printed link; custom domains require your own name resolution.

HTTPS & certificates

Local HTTPS is optional and needs mkcert and available ports: 443 or 18443–18462. LAN HTTPS optionally uses 443; the client must trust the issuer. LAN HTTP stays available on port 80 without an HTTPS redirect.

Optional LAN access

dwell up --lan mirrors .localhost application routes to .local. A separate gateway binds to the selected private IPv4 address. mDNS advertises the names; this is not an internet tunnel.

Auxiliary services

Backend projects enable Mailpit at /mp/ and phpMyAdmin at /pma/ on the tools host. Both are shared on LAN only with --lan-tools. MariaDB stays internal to the stack, without a published host port.

What you need to know

Version 1 has no separate LAN authentication. Every device in the reachable LAN segment can access shared application routes. Check what your application makes available there.

Missing mDNS support, firewalls, VPNs or Wi-Fi client isolation can prevent access. Sharing is best effort: a LAN failure is reported separately and does not automatically mean that local startup failed.

Control sharing deliberately.

These options persist the LAN setting in the project. If interface selection is ambiguous, use --lan-interface with an interface name or IP address. When an active application URL is available, Dwell can show a QR code; check access on the actual device.

dwell access

Find access information, without hunting for ports.

Dwell shows URLs from your current routing configuration and the gateway port. The normal overview hides passwords and does not check availability. It reports HTTP addresses even with optional HTTPS; the local gateway can redirect them.
